Never, ever, underestimate the heart of a champion.

Faced by uncertainty and grief during the first phases of her ‘new’ life, Chinese girl Qian Hongyan cannot do anything but to cry.

She lost both of her legs to a car accident when its condition became so bad that doctors decided to amputate it to save her life.

Confined to her bed, she became so hopeless about the dream of walking again and playing with her friends.

Given their poor status, her family cannot afford to buy Wian even the simplest and cheapest prosthetic legs.

But one day, her grandather thought of an ingenious idea that played a great role in her life’s journey.

Her grandfather bought a rubber basketball from the market and utilized it to become Qian’s ‘legs.’

He cut some parts of the ball and attached it to her legs so she could move comparatively with ease.

Ever since, Qian was known as the ‘Basketball Girl’.

He then made a wooden handle that Qian holds with her hands to support her weight.

And it begun the revolution of Qian’s ‘seemingly stagnant’ life.

Her anxiety of being not able to walk again is replaced by the fact that she can now roam again and interact with others.

She stated, “From the very beginning when I started using it, I became incredibly happy. For the first time, I felt I could finally get out of bed, out of the room and out into the yard, and had a much bigger space to play in, a much bigger world.”

Her story circulated the Internet, and essentially the whole world, lightning-fast.

And because of this, good-hearted individuals poured out their support and their donations spelled out the reality of Qian’s experience of walking again using her new prosthetic legs.

Because of it, she is able to finish primary school.

But her family’s financial stability hindered her schooling.

She is forced to stop and focus on other things.

Because of this, she decided to join South of the Cloud, a local swimming team for Chinese people with disabilities.

She used her experiences as her drive and motivation to succeed.

And it all paid off when she qualified for the 2009 Paralympics.

And to qualify is not the end, for she posted three podium finishes, taking home a gold and a pair of silver medals.

This moment sparked the start of Qian’s success.

She soon started lording on national competitions all over China.

She truly established a glittering career and tucked numerous medals under her belt.

Her story proved that there are no hindrances that stands in the way of a determined and driven person.

She inspired others that are also facing similar problems.

Qian truly threw her ‘Basketball Girl’ image away and now lives throgh the accolade Swimming Wonder.

Indeed, her grit and determination spelled out the success of her chosen career.

The horrific accident may have taken away her legs, but definitely not her heart.

And that heart is the one that made her complete again.
