After a series of triumphant runs on international beauty tilts, the Philippines lost its bid for a back to back Miss International titles as Mariel de Leon failed to advance to the top 15 of the 2017 edition at Tokyo, Japan last November 14.
Sent with high hopes fuelled by recent wins from Miss Earth Karen Ibasco and Reina Hispano-Americana Winwyn Marquez, de Leon simply failed to be at par with her foreign competitors.
Following this setback, speculations rose all over the internet about her loss.
Some pointed fingers at de Leon’s political inclinations which she mirrored on her tweet that sparked the ire of many Duterte die-hard supporters.
De Leon tweeted “Bloody Philippines”, which she quickly followed with, “It’s hard to wrap my mind around the fact that people are okay with murder because their leader says it is okay.”
As expected, it drew flak from many avid Duterte supporters, one of which is PCOO officer Mocha Uson who responded with anguish:
“Ate wag puro ganda ginagamit mo. Iba ang MURDER at iba ang pagpatay sa mga kriminal. HINDI INUTOS NG AMING PANGULO ANG PATAYIN ANG INOSENTE. Kung meron mga tiwaling pulis hindi ito kasalanan ng Pangulo at ito ay kanyang paparusahan. Don’t confuse MURDER WITH KILLING THE CRIMINALS.”
Other critics emphasized on the fact that de Leon is not prepared for the said pageant because her acting career crosses with his beauty queen time.
De Leon, whose parents Christian de Leon and Sandy Andolong are both showbiz celebrities, stars for ABS-CBN’s remake of FPJ Ang Probinsyano which stars Coco Martin as the lead act.
According to many observers, her acting career proved to be costly because it also requires time and effort.
However, de Leon managed to stay positive and instead look at the time and opportunity she made as the representative of the country as she wrote:
“To represent the Philippines on an International stage with 69 other women was something I never thought would be possible for me before! What a feat. ???? Thank you Lord for this wonderful and unforgettable experience! As tiring and taxing as it was at times, I enjoyed every moment and I will keep it in my heart forever. Thank you to my supporters (both in the PH and around the world for all the wonderful messages) filled with so much love and support! Thank you to my mentors for guiding me and supporting me since 2013. Thank you to my family and close friends for loving me sooo much and for being my rock(s) haha. I’m so proud of how far I’ve come, how hard I fought and how much I grew & transformed! Strong, empowered, and brave is the new sexy. ???? I still have my Miss International Philippines crown and now I can push my limits even more as to what else I can achieve and give to my fellow Filipinos! ???? I know that every time I step on the stage it’s a real gift, so I try not to take it for granted, and I try to make it an experience that the public can really participate in. I gave my all and I know I did amazing therefore I have no regrets! To God be ALL the glory!”
